Explain about Wu Long Tea


Wu Long tea, also known as oolong tea, is a Chinese tea that has been served for centuries. Most people who have frequently visited Chinese restaurants are familiar with its flavor, as it is one of the most popular choices of tea to be served in restaurants due to its pleasant flavor and aroma.

The flavor and aroma exist partway between that of green tea and black tea. The reason for this is that the green tea leaves do not go through the entire oxidation process necessary to process them into black tea. The grassy tones that define green tea have been done away with, and its bitter flavor is followed by an aftertaste that is much sweeter than might be expected. Still, it has the fresh, strong punch that you would normally find in a black tea.

It is best procured in the whole leaf form, and the long, thin leaves tend to come in tight curls instead of the near-sawdust consistency that you find in tea bags. You will spend more money for the whole leaves than you would for the tea bags because of the higher quality intact leaves. The tea that goes into tea bags tends to be the broken remnants that are left over after sorting out the whole leaves. There is nothing wrong with using tea bags, per se, but you run the risk of over extracting during brewing, which brings out various unpleasant characteristics that would be left behind if the intact leaf had been brewed instead.

Researchers at the Suntory Research Center in Osaka, Japan found that drinking wu long tea 15 minutes before eating foods high in carbohydrates curbed rises in insulin, thus reducing some of the fattening effects of carbohydrate intake.

Researchers from Japan's Shiga University of Medical Science found that drinking wu long each day helps to clear up skin problems within one month.

Dr. Kenichi Yanagimoto and colleagues from the University of California found that people who drank wu long tea on a daily basis experienced a fifty-percent reduction in free radicals within 15 days.

Free radicals are damaging substances in the body that contribute to signs of aging, including wrinkles and dark spots that are caused by ultra-violet rays, chemical food additives, pollution and stress.

Healthy Teeth
A study by the Department of Dentistry at Japan's Osaka University showed that regular consumption of oolong tea strengthens teeth and helps prevent tooth decay by inhibiting the build-up of plaque.

Stronger Immune System
According to a study published in Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, test subjects who consumed wu long were found to have stronger immune systems and a reduced risk for infections.

Wu Long Tea, Chinese Traditional Tea for Losing Weight


Wulong tea is a traditional Chinese tea. It is somewhere between green tea and black tea that is usually used for losing weight. It ranges from 10% to 70% in oxidation. Polyphenol which is found in this tea is believed to have a role in activating the enzymes in the body that breaks down body fat. There are more than two phenol-based hydroxyl groups inside the molecule of polyphenol.

The word Wulong means “black dragon” in Chinese. There are several legends show the origin of this strange name. One of them tells there is an owner of tea plantation scared away from his drying tea leaves by the appearance of a black snake. The tea had been oxidized by the sun when he went back after a few days. Because of that oxidation process, the tea has wonderful brew.

Another legend tells a man named Wu Liang found about Wulong tea accidentally when his attention was diverted by a deer after an exhausting day of picking tea. He almost forgot about it that the tea had already started to oxidize.

Another version says that the word Wulong is used to name the tea because the leaves look like little dragons awaken when hot water is poured on them.

Semi-oxidized of Wulong tea that is merged in groups is called Blue green tea. The taste is more close to green tea rather than black tea. It does not possess the rosy, sweet aroma of black tea, and it does not have the bitter grassy vegetal quality that distinguishes green tea. The best Wulong tea has a nuance flavor profile. It is commonly brewed to become strong, with the bitterness leaving a sweet and pleasant taste on the tongue.

Wuyi Mountain in the province of Fujian in China and Central Mountain in Taiwan are places where the original Wulongs are created. They are commonly processed and rolled into elongated coiled leaves or into a ball-like form to gunpowder tea.
