Drinking tea goes back about 5,000 years ago as evidenced by archeologists. There are indications that China and India were the first countries to drink tea. It is believed that Portuguese Jesuit Father Jasper de Cruz in 1500s had his first taste of tea and was able to trade with China for the tea.
Finally tea came to America by Peter Stuyvesant in the 1600s. It was soon after that England discovered the tea. You might remember the Boston Tea Party when the colonists rebelled against taxes imposed upon them without their consent and threw the tea in the Boston Harbor.
For many years there have been many studies on the benefits of drinking tea. There continues to be research regarding tea and the benefits. Scientists study the white, green, and black teas and believe they may help you live a long and healthy life.
Teas contains flavonoids which are compounds that have antioxidant properties. Green tea is made of unfermented tea leaves which causes the highest concentration of antioxidants called polyphenols. The antioxidants fight free radicals.
China uses this tea to treat depression, insomnia and nausea. Green tea also contains caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline which have stimulant effects. Usually 2 to 3 cups of green tea per day are recommended.
Many in the medical profession support the benefits of the tea and recommend it to many of their patients because they too believe that many diseases could be prevented by including it in your diet.
